Washington - The southern US state of Arkansas has executed a convicted murderer who became the 998th inmate to be put to death in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, according to US media.
Eric Nance, who was convicted for the 1993 killing of an 18-year-old woman, was killed by lethal injection on Monday at 21:30 (03:30 GMT on Tuesday) after an 11th hour review by the US supreme court, local station KATV reported.
The high court denied the final appeal by Nance's attorney.
The victim's and Nance's families witnessed the execution, KATV said.
The supreme court reinstated the death penalty in 1976 and the 1 000th execution since then is expected to take place this week.
