Assad's fall only matter of time: Mood

2012-07-27 14:37

Oslo - It is just a matter of time before the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad falls because its use of massive force is mobilising insurgents, General Robert Mood, the former head of the UN monitoring mission in Syria, said on Friday.

"In my opinion it is only a matter of time before a regime that is using such heavy military power and disproportional violence against the civilian population is going to fall," the Norwegian general, who left Damascus on 19 July, said.

"Every time there are 15 people killed in a village, 500 additional sympathisers are mobilised, roughly 100 of whom are fighters," Mood said.

However, the authoritarian Syrian leader is probably secure in the short term because he has the military capability to hold off the rebels and his eventual fall could be months or even years away, Mood said.

"In the short term it may very well be possible for him to [hold on], because the military capabilities of the Syrian army are much much stronger than those of the opposition," Mood said.

"The minute you see larger military formations leaving the ranks of the government to join the opposition, then that is when it starts accelerating ... This could last for months or even years," he said.

Mood left Syria after his 90-day mission expired - the mandate was renewed on 20 July for 30 days - and has been replaced by Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, who has already taken up his post in Damascus.

Mood, who commanded a 400-strong mission, was unable to stop the escalating violence and said organised groups with artillery, mortars and mechanised formations were responsible for some of the violence in Syrian villages.

I guess the same can be said about USA's war against terror. For every "terrorist" they kill using unnamed drones, 100 people mobilize and 10 of them become militant and want payback.. Same as the war on drugs.. Arrest 1 drug dealer, 2 others take his place. This article makes no sense at all.. Assad will not just roll over and let religious fanatics that have no legitimate plan for the country take power.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-27 16:27

The US is targeting Jihadists whom have declared war on it, not civilians who want to vote. You're obsessed. And wrong.

      Patrick is agreeing with himself.

      jans.opresser - 2012-07-27 20:03

LOL!Yes I have read this nato sponsored propoganda. and to Anthony,I did not know that Victoria "WEG" was in NY?I have been to NY a plenty of times and did not know that america had a city name "BAKOVEN" also? fred, what do you expect the people from nato to say?do you think that they will tell the truth and say "the muslim foreign jihadist are overwhelming the forces of Assad"? guess what? he is lying anyway because I just finished watching BBC and they are now claiming that assad is about to MASSACRE" (here we go with that again) all of the rebels and civilians in Aleppo. how is assad going to fall if he is about to massacre them? and it is now OFFICIALLY confirmed that the vast majority of the so called rebels are indeed in fact FOREIGN JIHADIST from IRAQ,LIBYA,PAKISTAN.AFGHANISTAN,MALI,and SAUDI ARABIA. Now if you are still o.k with this now declared FOREIGN INVASION,then you are sicker than I thought? the syrians now have the Kurds manning their border along Turkey keeping the foreign jihadist out of the syria, this will end the steady flow of fresh foreign jihadist from INVADING the country and fighting to overthrow a legitimate govt under the disguise of freedom fighters.

      greg.meyer.543 - 2012-07-27 20:24

Well said Jans, Couldn't agree more. The rebels are doing this for ethnic/geopolitical reasons, and NOT for democracy. Russia and China are not stupid, they realize this and wont fall for the western Agenda. I don't support either side of the conflict, but as it stands, Assad is just defending his country from terrorists.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-27 20:56

You don't support either side of the conflict, Greg. Yeah right. Do you think readers are that dumb? You're being disingenuous. It's so obvious. You're supporting the slaughter of Syrians by an UNELECTED dictator, armed by the neo-Communist Russian regime, WHO WANT TO VOTE LIKE YOU. Talk about being blind.

      jans.opresser - 2012-07-27 20:57

so right greg,I truely believe that fred and Anthony are paid radical salafist from the muslim brotherhood who are employed to post propoganda on sites all over the globe to tout their agenda. they post lies and propoganda thiking that it will benefit them in the end. well.......it worked in libya, have to admit, but the russians and chinese will not let it happen again!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-27 21:00

Jans, you're uninformed, highly prejudiced and flat-out lie. You're going to be exposed. Lies always are, at the end of the day. Like Fidel you have an immature anti-West core belief that's been played by the UNELECTED dictators of the Middle East and Jihadists who want to maintain control of the region at the expense of the Muslims citizens. Nato is not the UN. Hello! Exactly where has it "officially" been confirmed that "vast majority" of the rebels are foreign invaders? Making things up, changing facts, rearranging reality doesn't work. It's been tried many times by people more powerful than you. They failed. So will you.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-27 21:11

"I believe that Fred and Anthony are paid radical salafist from the muslim brotherhood who are employed to post propoganda on sites all over the globe to tout their agenda". Truly, you're living in Lalaland. Wake up!

      jans.opresser - 2012-07-27 21:32

fred,Anthony or who ever you are today at the moment,I do not have an anti west sentiment.all I have is the truth and facts. On Wednesday, CNN’s crew met a Libyan fighter who had crossed into Syria from Turkey with four other Libyans. The fighter wore full camouflage and was carrying a Kalashnikov rifle. He said more Libyan fighters were on the way. “The foreign fighters, some of them are clearly drawn because they see this as … a jihad. So this is a magnet for jihadists who see this as a fight for Sunni Muslims,” you see fred, foreign invaders!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-27 22:04

It's more than obvious you have little idea what is really happening.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-27 22:09

It's also obvious you distort reality to suit your own preconceived and biased version of what is happening. Basically, you make up large portions of what's going on.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-07-28 00:05

Everyone knows Jihadists are active in Syria. You're making out like they're everything that's going on. They're not. Syrians are freeing themselves from decades of oppressive rule by an unelected family who hijacked the Syrian state from them, the Assads. You should be supporting them, not making up a faulty reality based on immature anti-West prejudices.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-28 01:05

Jans aka 'thatdisturbedbrotherfromnewyork' and our dear patrick; Both of you talked the same kind of sh.t, almost word for word, re Libya, and he', you both could not have been more wrong!!! But keep on entertaining each other..........!!
