At least 40 hurt in arms depot blast
Caracas – At least 40 people were injured in northern Venezuela early on Sunday when several explosions shook an arms and munitions depot, officials announced.
The arsenal was located in the city of Maracay, in the Aragua state. All residents living within 5km of the munitions dump had been evacuated, state governor Rafael Isea said.
Interior Minister Tareck El Aissami said: “All government agencies, civil protection services and fire departments are currently working in the area.
“The situation, however, remains out of control."
Defence Minister Carlos Mata Figueroa said the arsenal was first shaken by a large explosion, which had triggered a chain of smaller blasts that still continue.
"We are waiting for explosions to end to begin our investigation," Mata Figueroa said.
