Sydney - Australia would have a new national terrorism alert system this year that described conditions ranging from possible to certain, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Thursday.

Australia had been at a state of high alert since September 2014, meaning a terrorist attack was likely.

Since then, there has been a café siege where two people were killed by a gunman who said he sympathised with the Islamic State (ISIS) group.

Twenty three people have been charged as a result of counter-terrorism investigations.

Abbott said there were more than 120 Australians fighting with ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and about 160 who support extremist groups through financing and recruitment.

The government would also boost programmes aimed at stopping people becoming radicalised, by identifying individuals at risk and helping to steer them from violent extremism.
