Bangladesh fishermen kill 10 pirates

2011-12-15 07:54

Dhaka - Bangladesh police say fishermen have beaten to death 10 suspected pirates who were wounded in a gunfight with security forces.

Local police chief Bashir Ahmed says the wounded men were being brought to a police station late on Wednesday when hundreds of angry fishermen snatched them from police and beat them to death.

He said on Thursday that police were far outnumbered by the mob and could not save the suspected pirates.

The deaths occurred in southern Bhola district. The area is 104km south of the capital, Dhaka.

Piracy is common along the coast of Bangladesh and fishermen complain that security forces are not doing enough to protect them.

Send these fishermen to the Somali coast to sort out the piracy problem there.

      Sean - 2011-12-15 08:18

Gut reaction says: "Great", but my head tells me this will just lead to a greater circle of violence with pirates seeking revenge, etc... Let goverments get off their butts and tackle this problem. It should not be left to citizens.

The world needs to take a stance on all convicted criminals and simply put a bullet in the back of theirs heads....that way we rid the world of scum and at the same time reduce the population.

@ Jack Did you really think about your comment ? Would you suggest this for all convicted criminals ? How about an 18 year old who shoplifts a loaf of bread because he's genuinely starving ? Clearly, you don't know jack about justice in a modern society !

Well as the saying goes... If you want something done properly, do it yourself! This issue with pirates has been going on for long enough!!

If you want to pirate as if you are in the buccaneering period, you should expect the punishment of the same age (1650). Seems the fact that law as we know it only evolved after the eradication of pirates means we dont really have mechanisms in place to handle the modernday equivalent.

Go for it!! about time.... the west have been tippie toeing around these pirates long enough... Nail them!!

  • Humble - 2011-12-15 08:38

my only problem with this story is "suspected pirates". If they were pirates, then good! its about time people started standing up to thugs like this!

      MrGuyT - 2011-12-15 08:45

Its like the "alleged" drug mule ... same difference

Go Fishermen! Yes - Send them to Somalia on anti piracy operations.

  • Robsschele - 2011-12-15 09:41

Good for them. Criminals enjoy too much comfort and safety. I think we should remove some criminals from police custody here as well.

  • ClaudsClosest - 2011-12-15 09:57
