'Blasphemous' cartoons printed

2006-02-01 10:29
line

Paris - A French newspaper on Wednesday reproduced a controversial set of caricatures, originally published in Denmark, which have been decried in the Muslim world as blasphemous to the prophet Mohammed.

The Paris daily France Soir printed the dozen cartoons, explaining that it chose to do so to illustrate the polemic sparked by their original publication, in the Danish Jyllands-Posten paper last September.

Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen expressed alarm on Tuesday at the wave of anger in the Muslim world prompted by the caricatures.

"We are up against uncontrollable forces. It will take a huge effort to calm things down," he told Danish media after the offices of the paper which first published the controversial cartoons were evacuated following a bomb scare.

The bomb threat came as Muslim anger over the 12 cartoons said to depict the Prophet Mohammed boiled over into a diplomatic crisis threatening Danish trade relations with the Muslim world.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rasmussen insisted that his government considered the growing dispute "extremely serious."

The French paper said it had decided to reprint them "not from an appetite for gratuitous provocation, but because they constitute the subject of a controversy on a global scale which has done nothing to maintain balance and mutual limits in democracy, respect of religious beliefs and freedom of expression".

According to France-Soir, "these 12 drawings could appear anodyne," but their publication, "which has tested the limits of the freedom of expression in Denmark, has engendered a wave of indignation at anger in the Muslim world".

Patrick says... Jaba.. OK. You want to go off the subject of this article a little. First you must not I am not anti the Israeli people in away way. Israel was created by the UN with no little or no consultation with any Arab states at the time. Lets us say then as now, those Arab states don't want Israel there. How can you blame them for not wanting it there ? If you were them would you accept Israel is a sovereign state ? Israel is most definitely an apartheid state. I have been there and seen it with my own eyes. Where do the Palestinians get the funding to run their "country". Israel correct ? Why ? So it part of Israel correct ? Iran has never acted in an aggressive manner with any country other than Iraq. Israel on the other hand is the most aggressive militarily in the middle east. Most recently their posturing just shows their leader's arrogance. There is no proof Iran has a nuclear weapons program In my opinion Israel will not continue to exist as it is if they continue to harass the region. There will come a time when change will happen in Israel. It is my fear that the people of Israel will suffer if and when those changes happen and they are not negotiated changes. Get it.
