Athens - An explosion that took place late on Saturday aboard a tourist boat at the Greek island of Kos left one person dead and another five injured, the Athens News Agency reported.

The boat was at the entrance of the Mandraki port at popular tourist island Kos in eastern Greece, returning from a sightseeing tour, when the replica of a small cannon blew up killing the 51-year-old Greek captain, according to the agency.

Five foreign tourists were slightly injured and transferred to the Ippokrateion hospital of Kos.

The boat was carrying 28 passengers overall, 26 from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands as well as two Greeks, but the rest did not suffer any injuries.

According to the agency, local port authorities are carrying out an investigation.
