Boat capsize - 17 Iranians dead

2012-01-22 15:22

Tehran - Iran's official news agency is reporting that 17 people have died after a storm capsized a passenger boat off of the country's southern coast.

The Sunday report by IRNA says the boat sank on Saturday evening while sailing between Hormuz Island and port city of Bandar Abbas on the mainland. Rescue teams saved five passengers, the report said.

The report says the boat began its 18km journey despite a travel ban on light boats by shipping authorities, due to a storm with winds of 80km/h.

Every day dozens of passenger boats travel between Bandar Abbas and nearby islands near the strategic Strait of Hormuz 2 100km south of the capital Tehran.

The weather was pretty fierce so it was foolhardy of the crew to try it anyway.

@Jou... Useless cheap shot from you. I am sure you can do better. I don't think the US are to blame for this one. Seems a terrible accident and terrible loss of life. I see you cannot even have an opinion on the article
