Istanbul - Rescue workers have recovered two of the 18 bodies that were trapped underground 10 days ago after a mining accident in southern Turkey, the country's energy minister said on Friday.

"The autopsy samples have been sent to a lab in Ankara along with the DNA samples of family members so the bodies can be identified," Taner Yildiz said.

The bodies were found late on Thursday night. Efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining 16 workers at the mine in Karaman province, which is located about 400km south of Ankara, which flooded with water.

The cause of the accident and the flooding is not yet known.

A mining disaster in Soma in May left 301 workers dead and remains under investigation.

In all, more than 350 miners have died on the job this year amid growing concerns about labour safety and inaction by the government to improve conditions.
