Athens -Two security guards were lightly wounded after an explosion at a shopping mall in Athens on Sunday, a police source told AFP.
The mall had been evacuated after two warning calls were made to a newspaper and a news website about an hour before the 10:50 blast.
The explosive device went off in a garbage bin on the first floor of the multi-storey Athens Mall, in a northern suburb of the Greek capital, where shops as well as a branch of the National Bank of Greece are located, the police source said.
The device went off during the evacuation, lightly wounding the two guards, who were taken to hospital in an ambulance.
According to state broadcaster NET, many people had been at the mall prior to the evacuation.
Athens has recently experienced a surge in violent attacks.
Last week, shots were fired at the headquarters of the main Greek ruling party New Democracy.
Earlier this month, the homes of five Greek journalists as well as the home of the brother of the government spokesperson became the targets of arson attacks that caused material damage but no casualties.
