Srinagar - A bomb explosion killed an Indian army soldier and wounded three others on Thursday close to the cease-fire line dividing Kashmir between long-time rivals India and Pakistan, an army spokesperson said.

The improvised explosive device hit an army patrol in Indian-controlled Kashmir's Poonch district, said Manish Mehta, the spokesperson. The area, which is heavily guarded by the army, is about 180km southwest of Srinagar, Indian-held Kashmir's main city.

The army believes the device was planted by insurgents. India accuses Pakistan of training and arming insurgents for attacks in its portion of Kashmir, a charge Pakistan denies.

About half a dozen rebel groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan since 1989. More than 65 000 people have been killed in the conflict.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over control of Kashmir, since they achieved independence from Britain in 1947. The region is claimed in its entirety by both but divided between them.
