New York - Jury selection could be completed by the end of next week in the trial of Boston Marathon bombing defendant Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a court official said on Tuesday.

Jury selection, which began 5 January, was expected to be completed in January, however, but heavy snowfall around Boston and the pace of questioning of potential candidates slowed delayed the process.

Ginny Hurley, a spokesperson for the court, said that jury selection has been "progressing satisfactorily".

"It is reasonable to think that the... process may be completed by the end of next week," she said.

Once jury selection is over, the trial can enter its next phase beginning with opening arguments.

Tsarnaev, 21, has been charged with carrying out the 15 April, 2013, bombing, which killed three people and wounded more than 260 bystanders and runners near the finish line of the iconic race.

Tsarnaev is accused of plotting and committing out the attack with his older brother, Tamerlan, who died during the ensuing manhunt, which held Boston in a state of fear for days.

A fourth victim - a security officer - was killed during the chase.

The bombing was the deadliest terrorist attack on US soil since the 11 September, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
