Wellington - A 12-year-old Fijian boy has died after being struck in the chest by a ball while playing goalkeeper in a schoolyard soccer game, the Fiji Times reported on Saturday.
The boy had no previous medical history and his death was apparently caused by the impact, doctor Ami Chandra told the newspaper.
Chandra said the shock to the boy's chest caused compression of the heart, similar to a cardiac arrest.
The deputy secretary of Fiji's ministry of education, Ram Chandar, said the incident occurred on Wednesday during a school soccer match which was being supervised by teachers.
Police spokesperson Prashila Narayan said attempts were made to resuscitate the boy but he was dead on arrival at a local health centre.
