Bulgaria seizes 47kg of heroin
Sofia - Bulgarian customs officials have seized 47 kilogrammes of heroin on the border with Macedonia, a customs agency spokesperson was quoted as saying on Saturday.
The drug was hidden in a car travelling from Turkey to Albania which was stopped at the south-western Gyueshevo border checkpoint, customs spokesperson Marina Marinova told BTA news agency.
The heroin was distributed in 80 packages wrapped up in oilskin and powdered over with strong-smelling spices in order to trick the customs dogs.
The 50-year-old Turkish driver of the car was arrested, she added.
This is the first heroin bust on Bulgaria's borders this year - the authorities seized over one tonne of the drug in 2007.
The Balkan country that joined the European Union last January lies on the principle drug-trafficking route from Turkey to Western Europe.
