Bus, trains collide in Argentina - 7 dead

2011-09-13 16:15
Buenos Aires - Seven people were confirmed dead and more than 160 were injured early Tuesday in Buenos Aires, as a public transport bus crashed into two trains.

The bus driver apparently ignored a low gate at a level crossing. The vehicle was hit by a train, which pushed the bus onto the station platform in the Flores neighbourhood, and in turn derailed and crashed into another train going in the opposite direction.

Alberto Crescenti, the head of Buenos Aires' Emergency Medical Services, told reporters that at least 20 of the injured were in serious condition.

The situation at the site of the accident "was under control," he said, after the last people trapped in the wreckage were rescued.

The accident took place shortly after 06:00, when all the vehicles were at full capacity.
