London - Prime Minister David Cameron has laid out his case for renegotiating Britain's relationship with the rest of the European Union in a tête-à-tête with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

But a statement released by Cameron's Downing Street office released on Saturday gave no clue as to how his proposals were received by his German counterpart.

Cameron has vowed to renegotiate his country's ties with the EU and hold a referendum on Britain's membership - promises which have alarmed many of the UK's European partners, Merkel among them.

In an unusual move, Cameron and his family were invited to stay two nights at German government guest house Merseberg near Berlin.

The details of the leaders' talks weren't disclosed, although officials said the pair also discussed the situation in Syria.
