Child-killer mom suing doctor

2010-09-01 15:13
Brussels - A convicted child-killer who slit the throats of her four daughters and son in 2007 is seeking €3m in damages from her former psychiatrist, a report said Wednesday.

Genevieve Lhermitte, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2008 after a trial in Belgium that sparked worldwide media interest, blames her psychiatrist for not rushing to see her while in a disturbed state.

French-language daily Le Soir quoted Lhermitte's lawyer Xavier Magnee as saying she is acting "out of principle" in order to "secure recognition of the prejudice genuinely suffered" as a result of the psychiatrist's "inaction".

She wants damages on the grounds that the doctor, Diderick Veldekens, did not act when she sent a letter on the eve of the gruesome killings announcing her intentions, the existence of which was revealed during the trial.

The children, aged three to 14, were killed in southern Nivelles on February 28 2007.

In court, the doctor said he had seen his patient in the wake of a first alarming letter on February 13, but that he could not see her on February 27 due to diary commitments.
