China 'pressures' Nobel committee

2010-09-28 15:42
Oslo - The director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute says a high-ranking Chinese official has warned him that giving the peace prize this year to a Chinese dissident would harm relations between Norway and China.

Geir Lundestad, who is also the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Fu Jing requested a meeting with him when she visited Norway in June.

Lundestad said on Tuesday that Jing warned him that giving the Nobel to a dissident is "an unfriendly action that would have negative consequences for the relationship between Norway and China".

Lundestad said the Nobel committee is independent and ignores pressure to influence its decisions.
