Chinese mom kills kid over poem
Beijing - A woman who beat her 5-year-old daughter to death while trying to get her to memorise a poem has been spared jail by a Chinese court, state press said on Wednesday.
Tan Hongying was sentenced to three years in prison by a court in eastern Zhejiang province on Tuesday but the sentence was suspended and she was instead given five years probation, the Beijing Morning News reported.
The report did not say why the court in the city of Jiashan handed down such a light sentence.
The girl died in March after Tan pushed her to memorise a Tang Dynasty poem, a common school exercise for Chinese children, the report said.
Tan said she "hit the child on five or six occasions, with three or four strikes each time" on the back of the head as the girl tried to recite the poem.
The girl was pronounced dead a day after the March 29 beating, it added.
The report did not give Tan's age but said she was a migrant worker from poor Guizhou province in the country's southwest who was born in the 1980s. She is also the mother of two boys.
Chinese schoolchildren face intense pressure to succeed in their studies to prepare for make-or-break exams as they grow up.
