Clinton: Syria cease-fire a first step

2012-04-12 21:39

Washington - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is welcoming the apparent cease-fire between the Syrian government and opposition forces. But she says a pause in hostilities is only a first step, and that the Syrian government must withdraw troops from cities and accept a political transition.

Clinton wants the pressure kept up on the Syrian government to comply with all elements of former UN chief Kofi Annan's plan to end more than a year of deadly violence.

She says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad can't "pick and choose" which parts of the agreement he wants to accept. She adds that the US supports sending a UN mission to Syria to monitor compliance.

Her comments came after a meeting on Thursday in Washington of foreign ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrialised democracies.

""The old way, the old order, is crumbling," Ban said. "One-man rule and the perpetuation of family dynasties, monopolies of wealth and power, the silencing of the media, the deprivation of fundamental freedoms that are the birthright of every man, woman and child on this planet - to all of this, the people say: Enough!""
