Vientiane - Laos signed an agreement with North Korea to develop software technology in the South-East Asian country, state media reported on Friday.

"Both sides will share their experiences in developing technology, open source software and the use of software," the state-owned Vientiane Times reported.

The newspaper did not give details about the agreement, which was signed this week between the governments, two of the world's five remaining communist regimes.

Neither country is known as a Silicon Valley - North Korea only allowed foreigners to access a 3G network starting last month while locals remain barred from using it - but South Korea recently issued a warning that its northern neighbour was training hackers to spy and disrupt computer systems in South Korea, Japan and the United States.

North Korea, however, has been better known recently for developing its missile and nuclear technology.

"Both sides will jointly organise training courses, technology and information activities, exchange delegations, publish educational magazines on information technology as well as co-operate in other areas in projects and activities mutually agreed upon," the Times wrote.
