Stockholm - Norwegian search teams have found the wreckage of a military plane that crashed in a north Swedish mountain range, as they continued to look for the five people on board, Swedish emergency services said on Saturday.

"Norwegian military teams found the debris of the plane on the western face of the Kebnekaise" mountain range, home to Sweden's highest peak at 2 106m, a statement said.

Searches were on for the people on the plane "considered alive until their bodies are found", said Haakan Alselind, a spokesperson for the Swedish police quoted by the TT news agency.

The Hercules C-130J transport plane en route from Evenes in Norway to Kiruna in Sweden was reported missing on Thursday when it failed to land at 15:05 (14:05 GMT), about 25 minutes after its last contact with air traffic control in Kiruna.

The Hercules was taking part in a Norwegian-led military exercise dubbed Cold Response 2012, with some 16 000 people joining from 15 countries.
