Rio De Janeiro - A cruise ship with about 2 500 people on board was blocked by fishermen from leaving its port Tuesday in southern Brazil.

The fishermen were protesting a decision by the government to ban the catching of endangered species. They insisted they would keep the port closed until the government rescinded the restrictions.

The protesters' trade union said around 200 boats surrounded the Empress cruise ship, which had been scheduled to depart for Uruguay from the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

Other ships have been prevented from entering or leaving the harbour since Monday.
