Daniel Pearl murder convictions wrong

Washington - The wrong men were convicted of murdering US reporter Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and beheaded in Pakistan in 2002, and US officials stood in the way of the real murdered being brought to justice for the grisly crime, a report released on Thursday says.

British-Pakistani Omar Sheikh and three other men who were convicted of killing Pearl were not even present when the Wall Street Journal reporter was murdered, says the Pearl Project report, which was led by Pearl's friend and former colleague, Asra Nomani.

Meanwhile, the man fingered in the report as Pearl's killer, al-Qaeda strategist and suspected mastermind of the attacks of September 11 2001, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, is unlikely ever to be brought to justice for the journalist's brutal slaying.

The report says Mohammed told US investigators at Guantanamo Bay prison that he slit Pearl's throat and severed his head, and a technique called vein-matching has shown that his hand matches the "beefy right hand" captured in a video of Pearl's murder.

But US officials opted not to charge Mohammed with Pearl's murder, fearing doing so would unravel their strategy for trying him along with four others for the attacks in New York and Washington on September 11 2001.

"The Pearl Project reveals that justice was not served for Danny," said Nomani, from whose home in Karachi Pearl set out on January 23 2002, the day he was abducted.

Pearl thought he was heading to an interview with the alleged facilitator of shoe-bomber Richard Reid, the Briton who tried to blow up a US-bound passenger jet over the Atlantic by igniting explosives packed into his footwear.

Abduction bungled

While the conspirators in Pearl's abduction and slaying were "inept" and bungling, US and Pakistani investigators who worked the case were not much better, the report says.

They began the case "chasing the wrong suspect, giving the killers time to slay Pearl and disappear." They let a key informant go and failed to follow several potential leads.

The journalist's killers bungled Pearl's murder and had to re-stage it after "the cameraperson failed to capture the original scene".

The report was released after a three-year probe, almost nine years to the day of Pearl's abduction on January 23 2002.

Pearl's body was found four months after he disappeared, cut into a dozen pieces, the head severed, the upper torso still clad "in the light blue track suit that Pearl's kidnappers had him wear".

would love to send you to GITMO - so they can give you a C.M.S

      TruthSeeka - 2011-01-21 10:54

Did you even read the article. Every terrorist event was staged by the CIA. One by one the truth is coming out. Danial Peals beheading was so fake it was unreal. He was already dead when the cut off his head and all the killers were Caucasian wearing gold watches. Any muslim will tell you devout muslim men dont wear gold. People are so easly brainwashed.

      Matsuka - 2011-01-21 11:02

So which is more evil, a bunch of muslim fanatics fly planes into the Twin Towers and kill 3000 americans so christian america invades Iraq which had absolutely nothing to do with the Twin Tower attack and kills over a million Iraqis? Or Palestinian resistance fighters kidnap an IDF soldier so israel invades the Westbank killing over 500 Palestinians, bombing schools, hospitals and powerstations totally destroying what little infrastructure there is? Or Hezbollah kills two Israeli soldiers in a border skirmish so israel invades Lebanon killing over 1500 Lebanese citizens reducing much of south Lebanon to ruble leaving the countryside littered with unexploded cluster bombs? Or the Palestinian resistance launches over 3000 what are essentially bottle rockets over an eighteen month period killing 3 or 4 Israeli settlers, so israel attacks the Gaza strip which is essentially a giant concentration camp, reducing it to rubble, killing over 1500 Palestinians bombing schools and hospitals in what has been defined as a crime against humanity after a thorough investigation by world respected human rights judge, Richard Goldstone? Or a Palestinian suicide bomber blows himself up in a crowded restaurant in israel killing and mutilating 30 israelis or an israeli pilot drops a one ton bomb on an apartment from 5000m up killing and mutilating 20 or 30 Palestinians? Just remember that amongst the mutilated israeli bodies is the body of the suicide bomber so the bomber has 'done unto other as he has done unto himself' something the israeli pilot, safely at 5000m cannot claim. Statistically Jews and christians are killing muslims at a ratio of higher than a hundred to one compared to jews and christians killed by muslim so called terrorists. So which is more evil? Still as an atheist I would much rather live in a christian country than a muslim country.
