Hanoi - The government says the worst seasonal flooding in more than a decade has killed 11 people, including five children, over the past week in Vietnam's southern Mekong Delta.

The government said on Monday that the highest water levels since 2000 have inundated more than 20 000 homes in five affected provinces and destroyed 5 000 hectares of rice fields.

Hundreds of people have been killed across Southeast Asia, China, Japan and South Asia in the last four months from prolonged monsoon flooding, typhoons and storms.
