Baghdad - At least thirteen people were killed in a suicide bombing at a Shi'ite mosque on Saturday in northern Baghdad, broadcaster Al-Jazeera reported.

The attack during evening prayers left 25 people wounded.

The suspected bomber was believed to have set of an explosive belt.

Eight people including a suicide bomber were killed earlier on Saturday in two separate attacks targeting police in northern Iraq, security officials said.

A car bomb was detonated by a suicide driver at security checkpoint in Mosul, 400km north of Baghdad, killing five people and wounding 15.

In Kirkuk, 250 kilometres north the capital, gunmen killed three police officers and wounded a fourth.

Iraq has seen a surge in violence in recent months amid mass protests by minority Sunni Muslims against Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shi'ite-led government.

The United Nations reported 1 045 people, mostly civilians and police, were killed in May in Iraq, making it the deadliest month in the country since 2008, according to the United Nations.
