Washington – A shooting at the US Navy Yard in Washington, has halted all departures from Washington's Reagan National Airport and forced schools to close, according to reports.

Chris Paolino, a spokesperson for the airport, said inbound aircraft are still landing and that the airport remains open to passengers.

"We can confirm that the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has halted aircraft departures from Reagan National due to an active law enforcement incident at the Washington Navy Yard," Paolino told AFP via e-mail.

CNN reported that Washington schools are on lockdown as a precaution to the shooting.

Early on Monday several people were killed and many wounded, when a gunman opened fire in the headquarters building of the Naval Sea Systems Command.

A US official confirmed that the alleged shooter has been "contained".

The Naval official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, added that the total number of victims from the shooting was unclear.

Obama updated

US President Barack Obama is getting frequent briefings on the shooting.

About 3 000 people work at the headquarters, which is responsible for building and buying US warships and combat systems, the Navy said.

The complex also has a residence that serves as the home of the Navy chief.
