Budapest - Hungarian police say they are investigating an incident in which an elderly man may have been mauled to death by two donkeys.

The incident happened in the western Hungarian town of Magyarszecsod, when Sandor Horvath, a 65-year-old retired firefighter, was apparently pulled off his motorcycle by the donkeys kept on a lot neighbouring his small farm.

The animals likely dragged him about 50m, biting and trampling him.

The results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death have not been released.

The donkeys are being kept under observation for another week before their fate is decided.
