Cape Town - Heathrow airport has been closed after a fire aboard an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

According to AFP, the London airport suspended both of its runways, after the parked plane caught fire.

"Both runways have been suspended after a fire onboard an Ethiopian Airlines plane," a spokesperson for the west London airport told AFP.

"Emergency services are currently dealing with the incident. No one was on board so there were no casualties."

AP reported that fire-retardant foam appeared to have been sprayed, but no damage to the plane was immediately apparent.

The incident is likely to heap more pressure on Boeing, which makes the Dreamliner.

Boeing grounded their Dreamliner fleet for four months, dues to faulty batteries.

In May the US Federal Aviation Administration approved Boeing's modifications to the 787's lithium-ion battery system, and other regulators followed suit, clearing the way for the plane to return to service.

Ethiopian Airlines were one of the first companies to resume flights using a Dreamliner aircraft

An investigation into the fire continues.
