Kuwait City - Kuwaiti authorities have nabbed a drug smuggling operation which aimed to sneak one ton of drugs into Kuwait and other Gulf countries by hiding them inside carpets, a police official said on Sunday.
"It was the biggest and most bizarre seizure (of drugs) in the Middle East," colonel Ahmad al-Abdullah al-Sabah was quoted as saying by the Kuna news agency.
He did not say what kind of drugs were involved or where they came from, but said they were "placed inside small plastic tubes in a big carpet" and were valued at "millions of (Kuwaiti) dinars".
A security source said the consignment was flown in from Pakistan and seized at Kuwait airport on Saturday.
The drugs were "not destined for Kuwait only, but for Gulf countries in general", the colonel said, adding that Kuwaiti authorities got wind of the planned attempt to smuggle the drugs one-and-a-half months ago.
The security source said authorities were questioning those who were due to take delivery of the carpets.
