Dutch police bust cannabis greenhouse

2011-12-30 08:23

The Hague - A tip-off about a stolen truck led Dutch police to a greenhouse where they confiscated cannabis plants and products worth more than €100 000, a police spokesperson said on Thursday.

Anne van der Meer said police in the northern Friesland province got a tip-off about a stolen truck parked next to a road 10 kilometres (six miles) outside the northern city of Leeuwarden on Thursday morning.

"Police found two men sleeping in the truck and further investigation led to the greenhouse a few kilometres away," Van der Meer said.

Police arrested five Dutch men there and confiscated 3 000 plants, as well as dried cannabis products.

"The total value of the confiscated drugs is more than €100 000," Van der Meer said, adding the five suspects arrested at the greenhouse were to be charged with illegal cannabis cultivation.

Although the Netherlands decriminalised the possession of less than 5g of cannabis in 1976 under a so-called "tolerance" policy, the large-scale cultivation of the drug remains a criminal offence.
