Brussels - The European Commission said on Tuesday it was rushing $1.8m in emergency aid to victims in Haiti of the tropical storm Jeanne.
Reports of the destruction and havoc caused by the storm were "very alarming", the European Union's development chief Poul Nielson told reporters.
More EU assistance for Haiti and other countries in the region hit by hurricanes was in the pipeline, Nielson added.
The United Nations has warned that the death toll from floods and mudslides in Haiti could rise beyond 600.
Nielson said urgent international aid was needed for about 18 000 people made homeless by the storms.
