Ethiopia slams HRW over report

2009-07-04 13:00
line

Addis Ababa - Ethiopia has criticised the Human Rights Watch over its report that the country's draft anti-terrorism law would violate human rights.

"HRW's so-called analysis is replete with harsh generalisations," Ethiopia's foreign ministry said in a statement Friday.

"It cannot be considered a credible commentary on compatibility of the draft law with Ethiopia's human rights obligations."

The US-based watchdog on Tuesday said the law, currently before parliament, broadly defined terrorism, risked muzzling political speech and encouraging unfair trials.

The law presented by the government of President Meles Zenawi is to counter the activities of some separatist groups.

In recent months, Ethiopia's parliament has passed a series of laws tightening up on the activities of non-governmental organisations, associations and the local media, while most political opponents are in prison or living in exile.

Smell says... The war could and should have ended with the fall of Bhagdad - and there would probably have been 100,000 less civilian casualties; and the USA could have been 1 trillion dollars less in debt. However, removing the tyrant at the top uncorked the vicious hatred between Sunni and Shiite. And the opposition of religious hardliners to a democratic state. Al Qaeda was in it up to their ying yang, beheading people on camera. In hindsight, the US gifted democracy to a country that was not ready to embrace it - a naive mistake with admittedly terrible consequences. But the groups and individuals that targeted civilians in Iraq were home-grown, not "Westerners". A medieval interpretation of an ancient religious text can apparently lead people to justify primarily targeting civilians. It has not been the US doing the suicide and marketplace bombings in Iraq. It is not the US that has been blowing up people while praying in Mosques. But if one's embedded cultural and religious enemies are freedom and democratic countries like Israel and the US, I guess everything is always seen in that perspective. Read the article...
