European nations call for new Iran sanctions

2012-09-24 11:19

New York - Britain, France and Germany have officially called for new EU sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme, diplomats said on Sunday.

The foreign ministers of the three countries wrote to EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton last week calling for tougher measures as the showdown with Tehran becomes more tense, a European diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

The EU is working on more sanctions as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad seeks to counter the pressure on his country at this week's UN General Assembly in New York.

Ahmadinejad met UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Sunday as the EU foreign policy chief held talks on Iran and other topics with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New York.

Details of the new EU measures are still being worked on but foreign ministers from the 27-nation bloc will discuss the move at a meeting in Brussels on 15 October.

Negotiate

The US and its European allies say that Iran is working toward a nuclear bomb. Iran says its research is for peaceful energy purposes. There has been mounting speculation in recent months that Israel is planning a military strike on Iran's bunkered nuclear facilities.

The US, Britain and France warned at the UN Security Council last week that time is running out for a negotiated solution with Iran.

"It is necessary that we sharpen the sanctions," said a second western official, confirming the request by foreign ministers William Hague of Britain, Laurent Fabius of France and Guido Westerwelle of Germany.

"We think there is still time for a political solution, a diplomatic solution, and this is what we are working for. But we cannot accept nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran," said the official, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

Ashton is to chair a meeting in New York on Thursday of the six nations - the EU three, plus the US, Russia and China - who have been seeking to negotiate a solution with Iran.

The international community has pursued a dual track of pressure through sanctions while seeking to negotiate. But the US and European nations say Iran is refusing to talk.

UN chief Ban "urged Iran to take the measures necessary to build international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear programme", said a UN spokesperson, Vannina Maestracci.

Ban and Ahmadinejad also discussed the war in Syria and the protests in the Muslim world against a US-made film that mocks Islam.

The showdown with Iran is one of the key topics at the UN assembly where Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also scheduled to speak.

Ahmadinejad, who will address world leaders on Wednesday, is probably making his last appearance at the UN assembly where he has become a controversial figure.

Western nations regularly walk out of his speeches in protest at his anti-Israeli comments.

Sanctions will not help much, their are other countries that supports Iran and will provide them with their basic needs. Destroy the nuclear facility, before the bom is dropped!

Salam - trigger happy? How in the hell can you say that after all the crap the muslims are throwing over a stupid movie? You don't see Christians nor Jews performing over insults to Jesus or Moses do you? Where is your head? Under a bomb in a turban I presume.

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what Salma wrongly calls "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children in Kindergarten. Imagine that. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys. 100 million Muslims of the Middle East have seen through the lies. Unfortunately Salma hasn't yet.

Salma, like you're misreading reality with your pseudo-victim beliefs, you misread what I wrote. I am strongly against chauvinism in all its forms.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-24 18:57

Again Salma, making things up doesn't make them true. I am against chauvinism in ALL its forms by whoever.

The recent decision by the Canadian government to close the Iranian embassy and expel all Iranian diplomats, citing "Iran as the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today," is as courageous as it is logical. It has been apparent from its very ascent to power that the regime in Tehran has been a sponsor of terror all over the globe.

      jaba.kov - 2012-09-25 04:36

Equally apparent is that the so called "Arab Spring" has rapidly descended into an Islamist winter, Assad’s regime will continue murdering its own people until it silences all opposition, the Saudi-funded Islamist ideology despises all other ideologies and, saddest of all, no one cares because the pathological obsession with Israel seems to mute the real human rights tragedies around the world.

The Israelis never appologised to Iraq for destroying their nuclear reactor, which was a total stuff up. If they are going to do it again, then they are asking for a serious fight.

      bouncing.betty.33 - 2012-09-24 12:17

So what you are saying is, I must put my gun down but you can keep yours up? Thats the reason why there is so much sh$t out there, peace comes from both sides, not a one sided show. P.S. Im sure Israel would love Iran to be wiped off the face of the earth, oh and Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt etc etc etc....

      bouncing.betty.33 - 2012-09-24 12:27

uhh Betha you might want to double check your facts at what Israel destroyed. Read the article about the reactor and what it can and cannot do, it was built by France as a peaceful electricity generating reactor, as in a power station, but then came the US and said, "ohh they making a bomb." That reactor was impossible to develop nuclear weapons...

      bouncing.betty.33 - 2012-09-24 12:47

You proudly live up to your name "delusional" Go read up on Operation Opera inparticular what Richard Wilson had to say, even the United Nations and every other country condemed the attacks. Oh and Iraq is now suing Israel for damages. So I will say it again, if you stop medaling in other peoples business they will leave you alone.

      bouncing.betty.33 - 2012-09-24 14:02

Its never going to work, Israel has nuclear weapons which you find AOK, but if an Arab country has nuclear weapons thats BAD, sorry the logic doesnt work. If you cant find a middle ground and be equal, well then you only have yourself to blame. And don't forget that the USA and the CCCP had the same standoff loooooong ago, they worked it out because each nation gave up a cetain amount of control, and NOT JUST ONE NATION.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-24 15:38

It breaks my heart to see the images from Syria and the abhorrent silence from the self-appointed guardians of human rights (United Nations/Arab league), whose obsession with Israel has made them blind to the real tragedies taking place in so many nations where the leaders butcher their citizens.

Nothing illegal about Israel's arsenal. Israel is a western democracy, and the government is ruled by checks and balances. If Israel were a undemocratic nation, ruled by a tyrant, or a religious facism, that seeks to kill innocents as a holy expression of worship, then the world would be in a whole lot of trouble. Precicely why Iran will be stopped from having a nuclear capability.

      insawf.londt - 2012-09-24 19:54

what a lot of crap, 'Israel a western democracy', israhell is an apartheid regime with weapons of mass destruction, they have to be disarmed

I hope Iran gets nuclear weapons fast. We are dealing with a rogue western alliance today that has thrown the rule book away. They are behaving exactly like their ancestors the Vikings, waging wars and pillaging. West Europeans are continuing this policy of genocide and plunder throughout the world. NATO/EU comprises these same old tribes of Europe organized under a modern day umbrella.

With a body and mind bloated full with HATRED, you have lost all sense of reality !!!!! ""West Europeans are continuing this policy of genocide and plunder throughout the world"" West Europeans take care for 88 % of ALL investments in Africa. West Europeans have created hundred of thousands of jobs in Africa. West Europeans have saved the lives of MILLIONS OF AFRICANS, who otherwise would have died through starvation or through sickness. Not even all those fancy words, and not even putting them in the right order, will cover up , your unbelievable stupidity, and a mind , besides filled with hatred is hollow !!!

The Iranian regime adjusts elections to hold onto power. It has stolen the Iranian government from the Iranian people. It funds the Jihadist movement that has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent people, mainly Muslims in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. It is supporting Bashar Assad's brutal oppression of Syrians wanting nothing more than the right to vote. It supports the stoning of women. It openly calls for the elimination of Israel and denies the Holocaust, the single biggest attempt at human genocide in human history: six million people. It is dishonest, highly repressive, and self-serving at the expense of the Iranian people. It's days are numbered, and it knows this. That is why it is trying to make a dash at developing nuclear weapons.
