San Francisco - A husband and wife died and their teenage son was missing on Monday after they dove into the Pacific Ocean in a tragic bid to rescue their pet dog struggling in 3m waves, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The harrowing event, which occurred on Saturday near the town of Eureka, about 430km north of San Francisco, was watched by the family's 18-year-old daughter, who called emergency responders as the scenario unfolded.

According to the report, the dog disappeared in the surf when it ran to retrieve a stick, prompting the teenage boy to dive into the water to rescue it. When the young man was overpowered by the waves, the mother and father also jumped in.

The mother and father were dead by the time rescuers arrived, and the teenage boy was still missing on Monday, the report said. The names of the deceased were not released.
