Flame virus on Iran reasonable - Israel

2012-05-29 15:43

Jerusalem - For anyone facing the threat of a nuclear Iran, using cyberweapons such as the newly-discovered destructive virus known as Flame, would be a "reasonable" step, Israel's vice prime minister said on Tuesday.

"For anyone who sees the Iranian threat as significant, it is reasonable that he would take different steps, including these, in order to hobble it," Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Yaalon told Israel's army radio on Tuesday, just hours after the virus was discovered by Kaspersky Labs.

"Israel is blessed with being a country which is technologically rich, and these tools open up all sorts of possibilities for us," he said.

Late on Monday, Kaspersky Labs, a top Russian anti-virus firm said it had uncovered a new virus with unprecedented destructive potential which was being used as a "cyberweapon" against several countries.

Several countries

Kaspersky said the virus was several times larger than the Stuxnet worm which was discovered in June 2010 and used against the Iranian nuclear programme, with Israel widely suspected of involvement along with Western security agencies.

Flame is "actively being used as a cyber weapon attacking entities in several countries," a Kaspersky statement said, describing its purpose as "cyber-espionage".

"The complexity and functionality of the newly discovered malicious program exceed those of all other cyber menaces known to date," it added.

It did not say which country the virus was aimed at but said the investigation began following complaints from the UN’s International Telecommunication Union about a piece of malware named Wiper which was deleting sensitive information across the Middle East.

According to Western media reports, Flame has been used to attack the Iranian oil ministry and Iran's main oil export terminal.

Kaspersky said Flame had been "in the wild" for more than two years, since March 2010.

It's not SIES if the president of Iran is building nuclear weapons and at the same time threatening to "wipe your country off the map" ...

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 16:29

John, that's simple and untrue logic. One has to look at the intentions of the parties. Terrorists resist change and seek to impose the most chauvinistic and oppressive values on society. True freedom fighters seek to liberate society from oppression and increase human rights and individual freedoms.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-05-29 16:58

Depends on which side you look at it from. The terrorism victim thinks his ways are right and his supportera consider any form of assault terrorism.

That's just Ego manipulations. True intentions are what count.

they can only deceive the world that they have cyber technology that can cause whatever.. Funny they are not bombing any Iranian nuclear facilities..There will be no Israel to speak about..They will have their terrorist asses nuked.

LOL... Well, we already knew that STUXNET has a very large family of cousins. So, who wants to scoff at me now when I said a year ago that Israel controlled Iran's computer systems, even its military command and control? Imagine Iran launching a missile toward Tel Aviv, only to have it turned around and dropped on Teheran? Or, better still, Bushehr or Natanz! Save Israel the trouble. Newsflash: The same team that built STUXNET built DUQU, TILDED and FLAME. Surprise, surprise. And this is just the softening up. There's more to come. Much, much more. Iran is in for some very unpleasant times ahead if they continue on their quest to build the Bomb. Bill Gates should be paying Israel for exposing all those flaws in his operating system! He's paying Symantec a fortune, with absolutely no results. Well done Israel - another battle won and not a single drop of blood spilled.

      Nosiphom - 2012-05-29 16:24

Just because they want to be independent and have a nuclear capability like India, Pakistan, US, Israel, France??

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 16:31

Nosiphom, you're confusing the Iranian regime with the Iranian people. The Iranian regime has stolen the Iranian state from the Iranian people. They want nuclear weapons to hold on to illegitimate power.

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-29 16:31

mmm lets see Nosiphom, i would agree with you however when you add Iran’s presidents continued threats to wipe Israel of the map it makes the whole nuclear issue unacceptable to the country being threatened with annihilation. Iran’s biggest problem is the same as Malema’s… they both can’t keep their mouth shut, exposing their true colours/goals.

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-29 16:54

Sage my FB profile doesn’t say much... don’t read too much into the BDS movement "Like"... I just ‘like’ reading the lies and misrepresentation on their site… all BDS is, is politically correct racists.

      Hugh - 2012-05-29 18:20

If you or I developed such a threat under guise of protecting our country or the world we would be in jail in a blink. What must be considered is that the US is seen as a prime target by some middles eastern groups. Todays technology is such that ecconomies will fall if allowed.

  • Hallo - 2012-05-29 16:20

Israel seems to be persistent in its efforts to pick a war....

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 16:28

Get your facts straight. If the Iranian regime moves towards nuclear weapons IT will be "picking a war". It has been told this over and again by the international community, even including Putin's gun-running regime.

      Hallo - 2012-05-29 16:37

When is Isreal going to admit it has nuclear weapons and get rid of them?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 17:10

Hallo, Israel has nuclear weapons and will only get rid of them when her neighbors recognize her existence, and end their longstanding war on her. Hello!

      Dawood - 2012-05-29 17:23

Its not in Israels interests and safety to pick a war with Iran...They wont know their ass from their heads when Iran bombs the sh.t out of them.

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-29 17:34

dawood you really are ignorant, aren't you? Why do you think that the only R&D lab for Microsoft is in Israel, and has been for well over decade? The computer your using now has Israeli developed software. Israel is so far ahead of Iran in cyber warfare (any warfare), it's the equivalent of a Qassam rocket to the most advanced cruise missile. So go ahead a brag if that's what your deflated ego needs. On Iran's best day and Israel's worst Iran couldn't penetrate an Israeli home computer, let alone anything important.

      andrew.arnesen - 2012-05-29 17:42

At Fred.Fraser.12 - I think you need a dose of reality... (1) Israel and the US already hold nuclear weapons (2) There is ZERO proof that Iran wants anything more than energy (3) even if they did develop a military nuclear weapon, why shouldn't they? It is total hypocrisy for nations who already have nukes to say no-one else should have them...

      Dawood - 2012-05-29 18:00

@ jaba.kov funny you call me ignorant...i use Samsung(100% of its parts made in the far east by companies 100% owned by the yellow nation-unlike apple(90% parts made by samsung and sony),or Dell(also 90% parts made by samsung and sony)- Dont be bluffed, the technology on most of the worlds major brands is developed in Taiwan,Japan,Korea,China..Most of Microsofts senior technologists come from India..India produces most of Microsofts technology...So dont fool fellow readers on this site by falsely giving israel credit for stolen technology..All Israel can do is mass bomb unarmed Palestinians, killing innocents in the process..They had their butts kicked by a small force like Hezbollah in 2006..They will never ever take on Iran- they know full well what will happen. And as for their weapons,99% American built, with 80% far eastern technology..Go and fool a grade r child, fool, and that too you'll find it difficult.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 19:59

Profandy, thanks for the dose. However: 1. Yes they do, rightfully so. 2. The IAEA has stated that the Iranian regime is hiding two nuclear facilities. 3. The Iranian regime, distinct from the Iranian people, adjusts elections to hold onto power. Effectively it has stolen the Iranian government from the Iranian people. It funds the Jihadist movement that has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent people. It is sypporting Bashar Assad's brutal oppression of Syrians wanting nithkbg more than the right to vote. It supports the stoning of women. It openly calls for the elimination of Israel. And it denies the Holocaust the single biggest attempt at human genocide in human history. Under no circumstances must this illegitimate, terrorizing, ultra-chauvinistic regime be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

      Dawood - 2012-05-29 20:14

Larry,Larry,Larry get your head out of ur ass and accept reality..the terrorist state of israel is the only state to contavene every every UN resolution concerning human rights...and they should know full well as Hitler exterminated thousands of jews..yet they do what was done to them...kill innocent women and children...they dont pick a fight with countries that have armies..israels army is over-rated..all they rely on is the nuke..cowards

      Larry - 2012-05-29 20:27

Israel kicked your chapped ass all over the place when Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt attacked Israel on several fronts, on several occasions. israel beat you black and blue, with conventional weapons against conventional weapons. There were no nukes then, and israel brought these mighty armies of syria, jordan and Egypt to their knees. So dont come here with your unearned bravado, and nonsense about a minor skirmish with Hisballah. What did Hisballah achieve? answer me that, fool. Your Islam and god is weak and inneffective against a handful of Jews. Prime ministrone for you too, have a good cry.

  • Wesley - 2012-05-29 16:49

need to aim this at Israel and wipe them off the face of the planet then we will have peace

  • Wesley - 2012-05-29 16:53

we have 300 nukes waaaaaa waaaaa they might get one( but they dont want one )and they will kill us all if they could they would brcause your killers of babies and the bringer of death where ever you go because your the chosen ones

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-29 17:16

So after I add the babies and the bringer - how long do I have to let it simmer for?

      andrew.arnesen - 2012-05-29 17:49

I also used to support Israel. Until I grew up and realised that there is NEVER any justification for genocide and committing atrocities against others. Israel should learn to live in peace with people whose land they effectively stole in 1949 and are continuing to do so whilst justifying their own horrific actions. Anyone who supports Israel's atrocities is just as hypocritical as they are.

  • andrew.arnesen - 2012-05-29 17:39

Yada yada, more hypocritical justification for taking any steps they deem necessary, even if it is against all international laws...

      pushka.vladovic - 2012-05-29 18:03

Yada Yada to you too "Prof" self confessed "conspiracy nut" pray tell, what use are international laws to Israel when her neighbours have all vowed to wipe her off the face of the earth? how would YOU respond to such a threat? The real conspiracy is the one against Israel that has every politically correct misguided fool spouting off about things that they do not understand.

      Dawood - 2012-05-29 18:06

after all israel is the greatest threat to world peace..always playing the victim, duping the world and calling big brother US to intervene, till he is bankrupt, and his citizens suffer at the expense of big business(banks, corporates, companies) who make billions and pay politicians to continuously vote in favour of wars(big business)...Israel-root to all the worlds aches and pains..

      Larry - 2012-05-29 18:45

It is Islamic facism that is a threat to world peace. Communism had its chance and was defeated. Islam wants to dominate and it can only do so by subverting freedom and democracy and gives power to the mullahs. Fortunately, Islam will break its own back against the bastions of democracy. As we see it, the arab spring is doing it for themselves.

  • Fawzia - 2012-05-29 18:06

WHAT IF THE FLAME WAS USED ON ISRAEL, THEN I SUPPOSE IT WOULD BE CYBER-TERRORISM & NOT A DEFENCE STRATEGY. ANYHTING SEEMS FINE IF ONLY VIEWED FROM ONE'S OWN PERSPECTIVE. QUESTION: HOW MANY NUCLEAR MISSILES DOES ISRAEL POSSESS CURRENTLY? JUST GOOGLE INFO & BE SHOCKED.

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-30 06:31

Fawzia - stop using Google! its a zionist invention!

  • Fawzia - 2012-05-29 18:25

THE PRESENT ISRAELI GOVT IS TOO CLANDESTINE & SECRETIVE ABOUT ANYHTING THEY DO TO PROTECT THEIR STATE. HOWEVER WE AS THINKING INDIVIDUALS NEED TO ASK " WHY DO THEY FEEL SO THREATENED BY ALL & SUNDRY"? ARE THEY FAST BECOMING PARANOID? WHAT WILL THEY DO IF AN ACT OF GOD OVERTAKES THEM UNAWARES? THEN WHO ON EARTH WILL THEY POINT A FINGER AT? THEY (THE ISRAELI GOVT) IS CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR SOME SCAPEGOAT OR PRECEIVED "ENEMY" TO VENT THEIR DISPLACED ANGER ON. THEIR ANCESTORS WERE ONCE THE VICTIMS OF A HOLOCAUST, HOWEVER THE PRESENT ISRAELI GOVT HAS BECOME A BOLD (NOT EVEN LISTENING TO THE UNITED NATIONS (WHICH IS ALMOST A TOOTHLESS BODY THESE DAYS)& OPEN PREPATRATOR OF A HOLOCAUST AGAINST THE PALESTINIANS. I WISH I COULD QUESTION NETANYAHU AS TO WHETHER HE NEEDS TRANQUILISERS FOR INSOMNIA? OR IS HE JUST INHUMAN & INHUMANE. (HARD HEARTED.) BEST TO OBTAIN FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE. INCIDENTALLY I HAVE E-MAILED HIM, HOPEFULLY MY MAIL WAS READ BY HIM (WITH THE HORRIFIC IMAGES I SENT TO HIM), BUT NO RESPONSE HAS BEEN FORTHCOMING, ASSUMING A LITTLE SNIPPET LIKE ME WOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR A RESPONSE. THE PRESENT ISRAELI GOVT TENDS TO THINK IT IS ABOVE REPROACH & QUESTIONING. THEY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE, LIKE ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING ON THIS EARTH.

      Iceberg - 2012-05-29 19:07

      Why are you shouting Fawzia?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 20:17

Israel feels threatened because it is threatened daily by Palestinians who actually attack it daily, and even teach their children at Kindergarten to do so. Palestinians and their unelected backers have been waging war on Israel since 1947, the day after Israel was created. Clearly you're uninformed. Are you going to say or do anything about the Jihadists and unelected dictators in your midsts, who are killing and maiming hundreds of thousands of innocent Muslims. Anything?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 20:19

Your desire for accountability is an inner desire your Higher Self is trying to get through to you about the Jihadists and unelected dictators that you're blinding yourself about. Wake up!!

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-30 06:36

They are not “threatened by all” Fawiza – only the religion of peace is threatening. They are threatened by people who have openly called for Israel’s obliteration. When someone threatens to kill you, you should take their word for it and take safety measures. You are a fool if you thing the religion of peace wants peace with Israel, for the truth (as you well know) that in reality it’s the religion of submission (not peace) and their aim is to get Israel (and all other non-Muslims) to succumb to them.

  • Dragan - 2012-05-29 18:26

Don't you guys know Israel is always right... no matter what.

      Larry - 2012-05-29 19:46

Under the circumstances, YES. There is no right or wrong in this world. What matters is the control of outcomes. If iran insists on following its current path, then the outcome is an Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities. This is a certainty and must obviously be avoided at all costs. The whole world (clever Western part) knows this, and therefore Iran is punished and its economy and people suffering under sanctions and threat of a wider conflict with the USA and Britain. Israel represents freedom and democracy, whereas Iran represents Islamic facism where freedom and democracy is haram. Of course, Israel is right.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 20:17

      A silly mindless comment

  • Kenny - 2012-05-29 19:31

Methinks this whole episode is a bunch of hogwash. The national cyber infrastructure running on windows? Come on now.

  • kafantaris2 - 2012-05-30 00:07

Only four countries had the technical know-how to develop the Flame virus: "Israel, the U.S., China and Russia." Since the virus was obviously intended for Iran, we can eliminate its friends China and Russia. This leaves only Israel and us. Having thoroughly demonized Iran, anything we do to it has become fair game. But there is nothing fair or right about taking another country's data. Certainly we would not want China or Russia taking out data and spreading it to 80 separate servers. As a leader of the world community aspiring for governance through universal fairness, we can no longer afford to follow the beaten path of expediency chosen by Israel. Doing so will not only deprive us of our moral authority, but will also squander our unique opportunity to fashion a more just and fair world.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-30 07:44

I agree with hwat you're saying unless it's the oppressive and illegitmate Iranian regime that was targeted with the virus. This can save lives and lead to greater freedom.

      boaz.yarmarkov - 2012-05-30 08:29

What an eloquent way to write the biggest load of BS. At the end of the day, if the Arab world stops being so racist, and accepts a non Islamic state the size of the Kruger National Park in a sea of 'Muslim' Middle East – then we will all live in a more just and fair world. If Israel’s survival doesn’t concern you – they don’t really care what world you want to live in – for they just want to live. Israel would rather hear your condemnation about them, rather than a eulogy about them.
