Fort Knox - The US Defence Department says an Army civilian employee has died following a shooting in a Fort Knox parking lot.

Military officials said in a news release late on Wednesday that the victim was an employee of the US Army Human Resources Command. The shooting occurred outside the command. He was pronounced dead at a Kentucky hospital.

Chris Grey, a spokesperson for the US Army Criminal Investigative Command, says authorities "are investigating a personal incident and not a random act of violence".

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family. Police are seeking to speak with a person of interest.

Post spokesperson Kyle Hodges says the post remains on a heightened security alert. A spokesperson says the FBI is assisting in the investigation.
