Gays still not welcome in US army

Washington - The White House said on Tuesday it was "disappointed" that US lawmakers blocked a bid to end a ban on gays serving openly in the military, but vowed to try again.

President Barack Obama's administration was "disappointed" that his Democrats could not muster enough votes to overcome Republican tactics that prevented a vote on repealing the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" measure, White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs said.

"We'll keep trying," he added, although a window of opportunity was rapidly closing ahead of key mid-term elections in early November, when Democrats risk losing several seats to Republicans.
