Sana'a - An employee of the German embassy in Yemen was gunned down by unknown assailants in Sana'a on Sunday, local media reported.

The unidentified man reportedly worked as a bodyguard at the embassy.

He was shot dead in an attempted abduction in the Haddah district of the capital, the independent website Almasdar Online reported, citing witnesses and an unnamed diplomatic source.

Dubai-based broadcaster Al Arabiya said the gunmen had been trying to kidnap German ambassador Carola Mueller-Holtkemper.

The German Foreign Ministry and federal police could not confirm the incident. The ministry and the embassy were working intensively to clarify the facts, a spokesperson said.

The embassy reopened in mid-August, almost two weeks after a terrorist threat prompted the closure of Western missions in the region and other parts of the world. Mueller-Holtkemper took up her posting in Sana'a on 30 September.

Yemen is believed to have one of most dangerous branches of the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
