Dusseldorf - The co-pilot who deliberately crashed a Germanwings plane visited dozens of doctors in the two years prior to the incident, a spokesperson for the Dusseldorf public prosecutor said on Monday.

Andreas Lubitz, who investigators believe was depressed, had consulted doctors over several health problems. The airline, owned by Germany's Lufthansa, was not aware of the severity of his psychological issues.

The German crashed the plane travelling from Barcelona to Dusseldorf into the French Alps on March 24, killing all 150 people on board.

The Dusseldorf public prosecutor is leading the crash investigation in Germany and continues to amass evidence as authorities look at how they can avoid such tragedies in the future.

Lufthansa said last month it was considering random health checks on pilots in the wake of the disaster.
