Germany: Gunman kills self, 4 hostages

2012-07-04 14:07

Berlin - Police commandos stormed an apartment in southern Germany on Wednesday after a hostage standoff and found five bodies, including that of the gunman, a spokesperson said.

The team was sent in to the apartment after police smelled smoke from the top-floor apartment in Karlsruhe at around lunchtime following a standoff that began at 09:00, police spokesperson Juergen Scheufer said.

Inside they found the bodies of the suspect, as well as those of the court bailiff who had sought to evict the man, the locksmith who had accompanied him, the woman who was supposed to take over the apartment and another person, he said.

The man opened fire when the bailiff and others went to his apartment to eject him for failing to pay his rent, and then multiple shots were filed, killing one person. Police then blocked off the entire area in the Nordstadt section of the city and called in the police commando teams.

It was not clear whether they had ever managed to make any contact with the gunman before the hostages were killed.

this is very sickening and i feel bad for those who lost their loved ones except the gunman and what i like about my fellow south africans is that if it happened in our own country they will be pointing fingers and blaming the government and the saps for being useless! i guess this things happen all over the world but we are too blind to notice!

@stillwaters just because you read one incident in a month does not mean that is the only incident that occurred! this one made it to the papers because a law official was killed!germany, france, usa and russia are leaders when it comes to hostage takers!how many US school kids got killed last year by hostage takers? how many russian churchgoers died in the past 2 years?

      mark.higgens.9 - 2012-07-05 13:16

  • wesleywt - 2012-07-04 18:58

I will be going to Karlsruhe next month. I though crime doesn't happen anywhere else but South Africa. My world view is shattered. I blame the ANC for not lobbying the German government for rent control.

  • Boos - 2012-07-04 22:18

Hey, guys, I live in Germany...have been for 3 years now and it is true... believe it or not there is less crime here ... really ... you freaking morons! S.A. has a reputation to uphold... murder & rape is what South-Africa is famous for and no paul ... it's not a conspiracy perpetrated by the whole world to make S.A. look bad ... it is reality.
