Gingrich attacks Romney deportation plan

2012-01-25 22:38

Doral - Republican Newt Gingrich says Mitt Romney's call for self-deportation of illegal immigrants is an "Obama-level" fantasy that is inhumane to long-established families living in the United States.

The leading candidate for the Republican nomination to face Obama in the November election spoke during a forum on Wednesday with the Spanish-language network Univision.

Romney has said he favours what he calls "self-deportation" over policies that require the US government to round up illegal immigrants.

Gingrich says Romney's proposal reflects a candidate who lives "in a world of Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island accounts." That was a jab at Romney's wealth.

Romney was taping his own segment with Univision later on Wednesday.
