Athens - Greek police defused a bomb outside a bank in Athens on Wednesday, after a local newspaper received a warning call.

The explosive device, which was placed inside a package, was detonated safely. Police evacuated and cordoned off the area in the suburb of Halandri where the bomb had been placed outside a bank. There was no damage or injuries.

An anonymous call to the newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton said the bomb was in solidarity with self-styled anarchist and convicted bank robber Nikos Romanos.

Romanos, who is serving a 10-year jail sentence, was at the scene of the fatal shooting of his friend Alexis Grigoropoulos by a policeman in 2008. The incident sparked weeks of the worst riots in Greece by tens of thousands of youths.

The 21-year-old Romanos launched a hunger strike 30-days ago after authorities refused to grant him prison leave to attend classes after passing university entrance exams. He stopped drinking water earlier this week.

On Thursday, state television said Romanos ended his hunger strike after political parties agreed on an amendment that will allow him to attend on-campus classes while wearing an electronic bracelet.

Greek Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasious said Romanos will be allowed to attend university classes, but only after he successfully completes a third of the first semester via distance learning.

On Tuesday a supreme court prosecutor upheld a lower court ruling rejecting his appeal for study furlough from prison.

Police arrested Romanos in 2013 along with three other people after they tried to rob a bank and took a person hostage.
