Athens - An escaped member of one of Greece's most lethal terrorist groups vowed on Monday in an online statement to carry out attacks.

An operation is underway to capture convicted terrorist Christodoulos Xeros, who vanished during a week-long furlough from prison earlier this month.

Xeros, 52, who was serving six life sentences for murders and bombings as a member of terrorist group November 17, resurfaced on the Internet site Indymedia with a photo and statement blaming the government for the financial crisis.

In the statement dated January 14 he also vowed violent attacks.

The group, which is on Washington's list of terrorist organisations, was formed in 1975 and was believed to have been disbanded in 2002 after a security campaign that preceded the 2004 Olympics Games in Athens.

More than 15 members were convicted and sentenced, as well as two of Xeros' brothers.

The organisation was responsible for the assassination of 23 people in 103 attacks on US, British, Turkish and Greek targets
