Hamas pressed for ceasefire

Cairo - Egypt is stepping up pressure on the Syria-based Hamas leadership to accept a ceasefire in the fighting in Gaza.

Egyptian officials close to the negotiations under way in Cairo say the country's influential intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, is urging Hamas envoys to get Hamas to co-operate on international efforts to end the conflict.

The fighting is now in its eleventh day.

Suleiman met with the Hamas delegation on Tuesday. The officials talked on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Monday that Hamas' officials based in Syria - Mohammed Nasr and Imad al-Alami - flew in from Damascus on Monday to discuss ways to "realise a ceasefire".

toofaan.monsoon says... @Monde : Please think hard on the cost of China's rise to power. Both in terms of it's past and it's future. It has been and will be at the expense of common people. I've been to China and experienced first hand just a hundredth of what it's citizens have to put up with. It's not a pleasant place to be. Do you really think that Chinese products are so cheap because of how efficient they are ? One reason is that the products are generally crappy quality and the other more important reason is because of exploitation of the labour force. It's an absolute paradox to me that in our country where we fight so hard for workers rights, we get into bed with a country with such an absymal human rights record. Read the article...
