New York - A hedge fund founder was found fatally shot in his plush Manhattan apartment on Sunday, police said, with US media reporting his son pulled the trigger after a row.

Thomas Gilbert, 70, founder of the multimillion-dollar Wainscott Capital Partners Fund, was shot once in the head by a 30-year-old man believed to be his son, The Wall Street Journal said, quoting a law enforcement official.

The alleged shooter's mother called emergency services soon after she found Gilbert in the bedroom of the eighth-floor apartment with a handgun nearby, the newspaper quoted the official as saying.

The New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, said Gilbert was killed during an argument and the son fled afterwards on foot.

A police spokesperson told AFP they were looking for the son, who has not been named, and that he was a "person of interest," but no arrests had been made.

Gilbert was dead at the scene, the spokesperson added.

Gilbert was a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School and started the fund in 2011, according to his profile on the fund's website.

"Mr Gilbert has extensive knowledge of the alternative investment space having spent 40 years on Wall Street with direct investing experience in the stock market, as well as private equity, real estate and the fixed income market," the website said.
