Copenhagen - Danish food safety authorities are probing
whether a slaughterhouse may have mixed horsemeat into meat marked as beef that
was supplied to pizza makers, the government said on Friday.
Food and Agriculture Minister Mette Gjerskov told public
broadcaster DR that inspectors from the Veterinary and Food Administration had
discovered possible problems at a slaughterhouse after stricter controls were
introduced amid the widening European horsemeat scandal.
"There is one slaughterhouse in particular where [the
inspectors] are not convinced that they kept beef and horsemeat separate,"
Gjerskov said.
DR said tests had been run at the unidentified
slaughterhouse and some of its customers.
If it is confirmed that the horsemeat was mixed with beef
at the slaughterhouse, it would be the first case in Denmark.
"People must simply know what they're buying,"
Gjerskov said, adding that legal action could be taken if it turned out to be a
case of fraud.
Denmark announced on Wednesday it was tightening controls
on meat as a result of the horsemeat scandal.
