Madrid - A 39-year-old Spanish businessman staged his own kidnap in order to fool his wife while he spent Christmas with his girlfriend - but came to grief when he blurted the truth to police.
The man, identified in local media reports Friday as "Juan V V ", caused about 50 police to be called up for special yuletide duty as they watched ports and an airport while he cosied up to his lover.
He finally turned up again on his wife's doorstep looking "tired and haggard" after the supposed kidnap, in which he got an accomplice to telephone his wife "using an Arab accent", the reports said.
The "kidnapper" agreed to a two-part €6 000 ransom payment in telephone calls with the wife, but no one turned up at two locations for the handover.
Police had been posted at these - Barcelona Airport and the city's Estacio de Franca rail station - when contacted by the wife after her "kidnapped" husband telephoned her on Christmas Eve.
The husband finally returned to the couple's home in Sant Boi, near Barcelona, after the Christmas holiday, claiming he had been released by the kidnappers at a nearby filling station.
Suspicious police subjected him to detailed questioning, during which he became confused - and finally told the truth. His girlfriend was meanwhile quoted as saying she did not know Don Juan was married. - Sapa-dpa
