Lima - Rescue teams are searching for two 29-year-old US mountaineers who have not been heard from since mid-July when they set off to climb Palcaraju Peak in the Cordillera Blanca range of northern Peru.

Gil Weiss and Ben Horne, both residents of Boulder, Colorado, were supposed to have come down from the mountains five days ago. So says Weiss' sister Galit.

She says a rescue team sent into the glacier-capped mountains three days ago has located the men's bright yellow tent at their base camp beneath the more than 6 000m peak and tracks leading upward.

Galit Weiss says the alpinists were last heard from 11 days ago. She says they were not carrying a satellite phone.

Palcaraju has four different summits. Their planned route was not immediately known.
