Los Angeles - Police in California have confirmed that a charred body found in a burned-out mountain cabin after a siege and shootout was that of a fugitive ex-cop, according to The Los Angeles Times Thursday.

Police in San Bernadino County, where the firefight took place in the village of Big Bear, told the Times that the identity of Christopher Dorner, a former Los Angeles police officer, was confirmed through dental records.

The body was found in the cabin following days of dramatic chase in the snow-covered California mountains. The chase ended on Tuesday after Dorner hijacked two vehicles and shot two police officers, killing one, as he attempted to elude his captors.

Police stormed the cabin where he holed up, using incendiary teargas canisters that set the house on fire.

Authorities said Dorner was carrying out a revenge campaign for what he believed was his unfair dismissal from the Los Angeles Police Department after reporting a colleague for use of excessive force. In the days before the chase led to Big Bear, Dorner allegedly killed one Los Angeles police officer and is suspected in two other murders.

The killing of another officer in Big Bear brought the death toll to four in the rampage.
